Temple Terrace, FL Memory Care: How Is The Dementia Management Plan?

Temple Terrace, FL memory care is highly effective because it is flexible and can be adapted to the needs of each person suffering from dementia.

By

Dementia is a complex cognitive condition that is not yet curable, and is the subject of ongoing research. However, there are a number of Temple Terrace, FL memory care plans which have been designed to help manage the condition, which is described below.

Establishing a Dementia Daily Checklist

It is essential for caregivers to establish a dementia daily checklist which can boost the wellbeing of the persons they’re caring for. Engaging in activities which are structured yet enjoyable will minimize negative behaviors like anxiety or agitation. The schedule may need to be adjusted periodically, and may consist of things such as:

  • Cooking
  • Creative activities like playing musical instruments, crafting and art
  • Brain training tasks like puzzles, games, or reading
  • Knitting, sewing or gardening
  • Physical exercises like yoga, golf, walking or stretches
  • Socializing with friends or family

When planning daily activities for those that have dementia, there are a number of factors that must be taken into consideration, one of which is their ability.

Additional Considerations When Planning Dementia Care Daily Activities

The abilities of one person suffering from dementia may vary greatly from another, and should be considered when establishing a management plan. Other factors include:

  • Interests
  • Dislikes and likes
  • Strengths
  • Daily structure history (how did they spend their days prior to getting dementia?)
  • Highest daily functioning time (the time of day where their energy levels are highest)

Both waking and bedtime should be kept fairly consistent as this will promote a sleep pattern which is optimal.

Example of a Typical Daily Management Routine

Below is an example of a typical daily management routine that can be applied towards someone with dementia. It is just a template which can and should be modified as you see fit:

Morning

Wake up and perform basic hygiene such as washing, toileting and brushing. Next, cook breakfast and give the person with dementia the opportunity to help if they want. Once breakfast is over, partake in a craft or art project, then take a break for quiet time which can be used for meditation.

Afternoon

Prepare and eat lunch, then listen to some music together or watch a film. This is also a great time for viewing family portraits and discussing memories which are related to them. Next, engage in physical activities such as gardening or socialize with the neighbors.

Evening

Prepare and eat dinner together. Provide a massage afterwards to prepare them for bedtime. Next, take care of nightly hygiene like showering or bathing, and then play a game or crossword puzzle. Play soothing music or read a book before retiring to bed.

How to Evaluate Plan Effectiveness

To evaluate the effectiveness of your plan, you’ll want to answer the following questions:

  • Did the recipient appear bored or irritable during certain activities or times of the day?
  • Did you give them sufficient time to rest between activities?
  • Which activities were most successful and why?

Based on the answers to these three questions, you can make the necessary adjustments to your plan so that those you care for can enjoy themselves.
